RECONCILIATION: A DEBT OF LOVE WE OWE ONE ANOTHER
The Gospel today invites us into one of the most delicate and beautiful ministries in the Christian life: the Ministry of Reconciliation. Jesus speaks plainly here. “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone.” He did not say, ignore the hurt or avoid whoever hurts you. He encourages us to go to the one who offended - not to accuse or fight, but to repair a relationship, to restore communion, to heal the wounded love.
However, Jesus is not talking exactly about a personal offense committed against us. His teaching today follows immediately after the analogy of the shepherd who goes in search of the lost sheep (Mt 18:12-14). Following up on the parable of the lost sheep, Jesus invites us, not just to forgive any personal offense against us, but also to be shepherds going in search of our lost brothers and sisters. He suggests a three-step strategy in this effort:
